Milford Sound

2/10/2007

Today had originally been planned to be the first day of our backpacking trip at the Kepler Track in Fiordland National Park, but we decided to push it back a day or two because a couple people in the group were feeling sick and because we decided to do the Kepler in 3 or 4 days even though 5 days had been allocated for the trip. We spent today driving from Queenstown to Te Anau (where we would start the Kepler Track) and then to Milford Sound, which is one of major attractions of the South Island. The drive to Milford Sound was incredibly beautiful. There were massive rocks and mountains surrounding the road along with all sorts of waterfalls. Here are some pictures I took on the drive.

Milford Sound was quite stunning. A sound refers to a channel that carves out two bodies of land. Since Milford Sound was actually carved out by a glacier, technically it is actually a fiord (or so I am told). Regardless, it is quite stunning. Just look at the pictures. The mighty peak is called Mitre Peak, and there is a humongous waterfall. Unfortunately, we arrived at Milford Sound too late to take a cruise, but the walks still provided some great views.

After visiting Milford we found a campsite to stay at for the night. A swarm of sandflies had blown in that evening, so we fortunately were able to stay in little cabins instead of our tents. Those NZ sandflies are brutal, so it worked out really well.
